How long can a migraine last

What is a Freestanding ER? Benefits, Myths, and When to Visit

When a medical emergency strikes, every second counts. Traditionally, patients had only one option for severe medical crises: the hospital-based emergency room. Today, freestanding emergency rooms (ERs) are transforming how communities access urgent, life-saving care. But what exactly is a freestanding ER, and how does it differ from a traditional hospital ER or an urgent care clinic?

What is a Freestanding Emergency Room?

A freestanding ER is a fully equipped emergency room that operates independently from a traditional hospital campus. Licensed by the state, these facilities provide the exact same level of emergency medical care as hospital-based ERs. They are open 24/7, 365 days a year, and are staffed by board-certified emergency physicians and specialized ER nurses.

Key Benefits of Choosing a Freestanding ER

  • Near-Zero Wait Times: The most significant advantage. Unlike hospital ERs where wait times can stretch for hours, freestanding ERs are designed for immediate triage and treatment.
  • Advanced Diagnostic Technology: Just like a hospital, freestanding ERs feature on-site laboratories, CT scanners, digital X-rays, and ultrasound technology.
  • Highly Qualified Staff: You are guaranteed to be evaluated by a board-certified emergency physician, not just a mid-level practitioner.
  • Accessibility: Located directly within communities like Carrollton, Frisco, and Plano, they bring critical care closer to home.

Freestanding ER vs. Urgent Care

It is a common misconception that freestanding ERs are just glorified urgent care clinics. This is false. Urgent care centers handle minor, non-life-threatening issues (like cold symptoms or minor sprains) and typically close in the evening. Freestanding ERs are fully equipped to handle major trauma, cardiac events, and severe respiratory distress, operating around the clock.

It is a common misconception that freestanding ERs are just glorified urgent care clinics. (If you are still confused about where to go, read our complete guide on ER vs. Urgent Care). This is false…

Conclusion: For residents in Texas, having access to a freestanding ER means faster, more personalized, and highly advanced medical care without the chaos of a traditional hospital waiting room. When an emergency happens, Immediate Care Centers of Texas is ready to provide immediate, high-quality medical intervention.

I remember when I took my dad here when he was experiencing a stroke but I wasn’t familiar with stroke symptoms so I didn’t know he was having a stroke and I didn’t think to call the ambulance because I was just in shock so I directly took him. When I got there, one of the nurses yelled at me and said “why didn’t you call the ambulance?!!” while I was uncontrollably crying and clearly in a state of shock. That’s not how you should treat a patient’s family member that’s clearly in distress. Oh and a stroke is a serious emergency but my dad was here for HOURS before they transported him to a bigger hospital… I should’ve questioned them why it’s taking so long for him to get transported. One more thing, when i first came in, the front desk lady could clearly see my dad was not well or in a good condition and she asked if we had insurance and that we have to pay out of pocket if we didn’t, like is that seriously important right now when my dad is experiencing an emergency?!!!

Great service. I felt well taken care of. The doctor sent me to a different hospital to be admitted because I needed additional care. But while I was there they took the time to explain everything.

The team at Castle Hills ER is truly one of a kind. Dealing with a traumatic experience was tough enough, and they treated me kindly and with concern. I appreciate how they communicated and explained everything. This made me confident in their treatment. Dr. Farhat and staff, keep up the amazing work!

The staff here is amazing!!! Syeda got us in quickly and was so kind and helpful, she gave my 6 year old crackers and juice and provided me with a plug to charge her tablet. They attended to my wife's medical concerns with care and compassion. This is by far one of the best experiences I've had with emergency care and I have to brag about Syeda and how wonderful she was throughout our entire visit, she really went above and beyond for us and I am so grateful for her service! Thank you so much Syeda you are an amazing person!

I was so impressed with the care I received at Total Point from my nurse, Nina! I did not have to wait in the waiting room! As soon as I checked in, I was escorted to a room by the sweetest nurse, Nina. She took the time to listen to why I came to the ER; you could tell that she loved her job and truly expedited my care. She immediately started my IV and got it on the first try (and she was obviously very experienced because it genuinely did not hurt at all)!!! Nurse Nina and the DR were immediately able to control the pain that I had been suffering from for days. I was so impressed with how fast I received test results as well. I know that everyone dreads waiting in emergency rooms, and that was just not the case at Total Point ER! Nina was the most compassionate nurse that I have ever encountered, and her calming and kind presence truly made a difference for me in my time of need. Nina is a 10/10 nurse, and I recommend that everyone I know who is in need of emergency medical care go here and ask for nurse NINA! Thank y'all for taking such good care of me during my time of need I am wholeheartedly grateful!!!
